Together with others, I planted hundreds of trees as a tribute to a loved one who died in a traffic incident: Joseph’s Wood, located in South Wales. While working I became aware of all of the connections and communications within the environment: the language of the earth is not one of words but of unlimited observable and unobservable transmissions. ‘Celtic Rainforest’ is a nod to these alternate forms of communication through vibrations, sounds and smells.
The installation exists of subwoofer drivers under containers, the drivers play sounds that agitate the scents within the containers, creating patterns and connections. The sounds and odours come from the woodland, they mimic the transmissions in a way that humans can perceive. The vibrations can be felt by the audience’s feet as well as seen and heard, the rhythms become meditative and rejuvenating, creating a synthesised forest bathing experience.
